You can sit on the computer all day, looking at listings for single family homes, but it's not going to be quite as useful as hiring a real estate agent to help you. Contrary to what you might believe, it's the buyer who pays all real estate agents, so having one isn't going to cost you anything. In return, you'll get assistance finding and looking at houses that you might otherwise have overlooked or not even seen listed in the first place.
